Community ProgramsThe following programs are available in many communities in Winnipeg. Call your local Winnipeg Regional Health Authority community office or (204) 926-8000 to find out where and when they are offered in your neighbourhood.
Alphabet SoupAlphabet Soup is a free six-week nutrition and literacy program for preschoolers (ages 2 to 5) and their parents. It teaches the basics of healthy eating through the love of reading, rhyme and song. Parents and children read food-themed books, prepare snacks and eat together. Afterwards, parents discuss literacy and healthy eating ideas while children participate in free play, more reading and food-related crafts.
Alphabet Soup in motionAlphabet Soup in motion is a free six-week program that teaches preschoolers (ages 2 to 5) and their parents the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. It encourages active play concepts by doing and through the love of reading, rhyme and song. Each week, parents and preschoolers form an active family book, rhyme and song circle based on themes. At snack time, parents and children learn new snack ideas and enjoy creating and eating together. Afterwards, parents learn exciting new activity games to help them incorporate active living in their family life, while children continue to be physically active through games, crafts and fun activities.
Healthy BabyPregnant women and moms with babies can drop in at Healthy Baby programs in their communities. These free sessions are facilitated by community nutritionists and public health nurses. Enjoy nutritious snacks, try new recipes and learn more about nutrition and health. Meet other moms and moms-to-be. Milk coupons, bus tickets and child care are available. Kids in the KitchenKids in the Kitchen is a cooking club for children, 6-11 years old. Kids cook healthy snacks and dishes and eat together, while learning about food and kitchen safety, food facts and being active through fun and lively activities. Livin' It UpLivin' It Up is a wellness program for active seniors that focuses on healthy eating, physical wellbeing and social interaction. The program is facilitated by trained volunteers and WRHA staff.
Wiggle, Giggle & MunchWiggle, Giggle & Munch is a free program for parents and preschoolers (ages 2 to 5) that focuses on active play such as active songs, games, dancing, and a series of activities that help children develop specific movement skills. Each session includes a healthy snack, messages about physical activity and healthy eating, and activities for parents and preschoolers to do together. It also provides a chance for participants to get to know one another and their community. |
