The Perfect Picnic
If you are looking for a great way to enjoy the summer sunshine, get active and spend time with family and friends, consider planning a picnic. Keep it simple and get your children involved in planning and helping to prepare. Consider location, items you will need, and of course, the food!
Pick a theme for your picnic meal:
Keep food cold with freezer packs and make sure to take plenty of cold water along to quench your thirst.
Choose a location that you can walk, bike or hike to. Plan activities that get everyone involved. Try something new or play an old family favourite.
- Frisbee golf can be played with a few simple items including a Frisbee and towels or a couple of clothing items. Set up three or four towels or items of clothing as a target and then have each player throw the Frisbee to land on the target. The number of times it takes to reach the target is your count for that ‘hole'. The player with the lowest number after the round is the winner!
- Have younger children participate in different types of races, including the spider race where children have to race to the finish line walking on their hands and feet.
- For older children ‘capture the flag' is a game that gets children moving while having fun. To play the game divide into two groups and have each group hide the ‘flag' (or other item) and call out when it is hidden. The goal is to get the other teams' flag without getting tagged in opponent territory - the first team to capture the flag wins.
Other items needed:
Backpack (easy to carry while walking/biking)
Blanket
Sunscreen
Bug repellant
Hat
Cutlery and utensils
Plates and cups
Cloth napkins
Ball or Frisbee
Bag for garbage
Make it an eco-friendly picnic and pack reusable water bottles, plates and utensils, and cloth napkins.
Most importantly, enjoy the fresh air of summer and the time spent being together with your family and friends!
